Familial Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm

Familial thoracic aortic aneurysm (pronounced: fa-MIL-ee-al thor-AS-ik AOR-tik an-yoo-RIZ-um) is a genetic condition that primarily affects the aorta, the main blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body.

Etymology

The term 'Familial thoracic aortic aneurysm' is derived from the following components: 'Familial' (from Latin 'familia' meaning 'family'), indicating that the condition is inherited; 'thoracic' (from Greek 'thorax' meaning 'chest'), referring to the part of the aorta that runs through the chest; 'aortic' (from Greek 'aorte' meaning 'the great artery'), pertaining to the aorta; and 'aneurysm' (from Greek 'aneurysma' meaning 'dilation'), which is a bulge or ballooning in the wall of an artery.

Definition

A Familial thoracic aortic aneurysm is an inherited disorder that causes the wall of the aorta in the chest (thoracic aorta) to weaken and bulge outward, forming an aneurysm. This condition increases the risk of aortic dissection and rupture, which can lead to life-threatening internal bleeding.
