Fasting Blood Sugar

Fasting Blood Sugar (pronounced: fast-ing bluhd shoo-gar), also known as Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG), is a medical test that measures the level of glucose in the blood after a period of fasting. The term originates from the words "fasting" (from Old English fæstan, meaning "to fast") and "blood sugar" (from Old English blōd and Middle English sugre).

Overview

The Fasting Blood Sugar test is used to diagnose diabetes and prediabetes. It is a simple blood test taken after the individual has not eaten for at least eight hours. Normal fasting blood sugar levels are less than 100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). A fasting blood sugar level from 100 to 125 mg/dL is considered prediabetes, and a fasting blood sugar level of 126 mg/dL or higher on two separate tests indicates diabetes.

Procedure

The Fasting Blood Sugar test is usually performed in the morning, as the individual is required to fast overnight. A blood sample is taken from a vein in the arm and sent to a laboratory for analysis. The results are usually available within a few hours.
