Filaminast (pronounced: /fɪˈlæmɪnæst/) is a potent and selective inhibitor of Phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4). It is primarily used in the research of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Etymology

The term "Filaminast" is derived from the Latin words filum meaning "thread" and inastare meaning "to stand upon". This is in reference to the drug's mechanism of action, which involves the inhibition of PDE4, an enzyme that breaks down cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) in cells. By inhibiting PDE4, Filaminast increases the levels of cAMP, which in turn reduces inflammation and relaxes the muscles in the airways.

Pharmacology

Filaminast is a selective PDE4 inhibitor, which means it specifically targets and inhibits the PDE4 enzyme. This enzyme is responsible for breaking down cAMP in cells. By inhibiting PDE4, Filaminast increases the levels of cAMP, which in turn reduces inflammation and relaxes the muscles in the airways. This makes it a potential treatment for conditions such as asthma and COPD, which are characterized by inflammation and constriction of the airways.

Related Terms

  • Phosphodiesterase 4: The enzyme that Filaminast inhibits.
  • Asthma: A chronic condition characterized by inflammation and constriction of the airways, which Filaminast may help to treat.
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): A group of lung diseases characterized by airflow obstruction, which Filaminast may help to treat.
  • Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP): A molecule that plays a crucial role in many biological processes, including the relaxation of smooth muscle tissue in the airways.
