Filipino (Medicine)

Filipino (pronunciation: /fɪlɪˈpiːnoʊ/; etymology: derived from the term "las Islas Filipinas", the name given to the archipelago in 1543 by the Spanish explorer Ruy López de Villalobos in honor of Philip II of Spain) is a term that refers to a native or national of the Philippines, and also to the national language of the country.

In the context of medicine, Filipino refers to the medical practices, beliefs, and traditions that are native to the Philippines. These practices are often a blend of traditional Filipino healing practices, known as Hilot, and Western medicine.

Hilot

Hilot (pronunciation: /hiːˈloʊt/; etymology: derived from the Tagalog word for "massage" or "healer") is a traditional Filipino healing practice that involves massage, herbal medicine, and spiritual healing. It is often used in rural areas of the Philippines where access to Western medicine is limited.

Hilot practitioners, known as manghihilot, use their hands to diagnose and treat various ailments. They believe that the body is made up of four elements: fire, air, water, and earth, and that illness is caused by an imbalance in these elements.

Western Medicine in the Philippines

The introduction of Western medicine in the Philippines began during the Spanish colonial period. Today, Western medicine is widely practiced in the Philippines, particularly in urban areas. However, many Filipinos still use traditional healing practices like Hilot alongside Western medicine.

Filipino Medical Terms

There are several medical terms that are unique to the Filipino language. For example, sakit is the Filipino word for illness or disease, gamot is the word for medicine, and doktor is the word for doctor.
