Functional disorder

Functional disorder (pronunciation: /ˈfʌŋkʃənəl dɪsˈɔːdər/) is a medical condition that impairs the normal functioning of a bodily process, but where every part of the body looks completely normal under examination, dissection or even under a microscope. This is distinct from structural disorder in which the abnormality can be seen.

Etymology

The term "functional" comes from the Latin word functio meaning "performance, execution", and the term "disorder" comes from the Old French desordre meaning "lack of order". In the context of medicine, a functional disorder refers to a disorder where the function of an organ or body part is impaired, despite the structure being normal.
