Gift (medicine)

Gift (pronounced: /ɡɪft/) is a term used in the medical field to refer to the Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer procedure.

Etymology

The term 'Gift' is an acronym derived from the phrase Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer. The word 'gamete' originates from the Greek word 'gametes' meaning 'husband' and 'gamos' meaning 'marriage'. The term 'intrafallopian' is derived from 'intra-' meaning 'within' and 'fallopian' referring to the Fallopian tubes, named after the Italian anatomist Gabriele Falloppio.

Definition

Gift is a procedure used to treat certain types of infertility. In this procedure, a woman's eggs are removed, mixed with sperm, and then placed directly into one of her fallopian tubes. This allows fertilization to take place inside the woman's body.

Related Terms

  • In Vitro Fertilization (IVF): A procedure where fertilization happens outside the body. The fertilized egg (embryo) is then transferred into the woman's uterus.
  • Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (ZIFT): Similar to GIFT, but in this case, fertilization happens in a lab before the zygote is transferred into the fallopian tube.
  • Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI): A procedure where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg to achieve fertilization.
