Glossopharyngeal Breathing

Glossopharyngeal breathing (pronunciation: glɒsoʊfəˈrɪndʒiəl ˈbriːðɪŋ), also known as frog breathing or glossopharyngeal insufflation, is a method of breathing that involves gulping or swallowing air into the lungs. This technique is often used by individuals with certain types of neuromuscular disease or spinal cord injury who have weakened diaphragm muscles and cannot breathe deeply on their own.

Etymology

The term "glossopharyngeal" is derived from the Greek words "glossa," meaning tongue, and "pharynx," meaning throat. It refers to the glossopharyngeal nerve, which controls the muscles used in this method of breathing.

Technique

Glossopharyngeal breathing involves using the tongue and throat muscles to create pressure and push air into the lungs. This is done by closing the glottis, or voice box, and using the tongue to force air down into the lungs. This technique can be used to increase lung volume and improve oxygenation.
