Granular Parakeratosis

Granular parakeratosis (pronunciation: grăn′yə-lər păr′ə-kĕr′ə-tō′sĭs) is a rare, benign skin condition characterized by the retention of keratohyalin granules in the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin.

Etymology

The term "granular parakeratosis" is derived from three words: "granular", referring to the granular appearance of the skin lesions; "para", a prefix in medical terminology meaning "beside" or "abnormal"; and "keratosis", a term used to describe a growth of keratin, a protein found in the skin.

Symptoms

Symptoms of granular parakeratosis include red, scaly patches or plaques on the skin, typically in areas of friction such as the armpits or groin. The condition is often asymptomatic, meaning it does not cause any discomfort or pain, but some individuals may experience mild itching or irritation.

Causes

The exact cause of granular parakeratosis is unknown, but it is thought to be related to an abnormal response to irritation or trauma to the skin. Some studies suggest a possible link to the use of antiperspirants or other skin products.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of granular parakeratosis is typically made through a skin biopsy, which involves taking a small sample of skin for examination under a microscope. The characteristic finding is the presence of keratohyalin granules in the stratum corneum.

Treatment

Treatment for granular parakeratosis often involves the use of topical corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and promote healing of the skin. In some cases, discontinuation of the offending skin product may result in resolution of the condition.
