Gravidity and Parity

Gravidity (pronounced: /ˈɡrævɪdɪti/) and parity (pronounced: /ˈpærɪti/) are terms used in Obstetrics and Gynecology to represent the number of times a woman has been pregnant and given birth, respectively.

Etymology

The term "gravidity" is derived from the Latin word "gravidus," which means heavy, a reference to the state of pregnancy. "Parity," on the other hand, comes from the Latin word "paritas," which means equal, referring to the number of times a woman has given birth.

Gravidity

Gravidity refers to the number of times a woman has been pregnant, regardless of whether these pregnancies were carried to term. A woman who has never been pregnant is referred to as a nulligravida, a woman who is (or has been only once) pregnant is referred to as a primigravida, and a woman who has been pregnant more than once is referred to as a multigravida.

Parity

Parity refers to the number of pregnancies in which the fetus or fetuses have reached 20 weeks of gestation, not the number of fetuses (e.g., twins) born. Parity is further sub-classified into nullipara (no births beyond 20 weeks), primipara (one birth beyond 20 weeks), and multipara (two or more births beyond 20 weeks).
