Handicapped

Handicapped (/ˈhandiˌkapt/), is a term used to describe individuals who have physical or mental disabilities that may limit their full participation in various societal activities. The term has its origins in the mid-20th century, derived from the phrase "hand in cap," which was a game of chance played by people in the past.

Etymology

The term "handicapped" is believed to have originated from an old English game called "hand in cap". In this game, two players would trade possessions, and a third, neutral person would attempt to arbitrate the value difference with money. The term later evolved to describe individuals with disabilities, as it was thought they were metaphorically playing life with a disadvantage, or a "hand in cap".
