Hematometra

Hematometra (pronounced: hee-muh-toh-mee-truh) is a medical condition involving the accumulation of menstrual blood in the uterus. This condition is often caused by the obstruction of the uterus or the vagina.

Etymology

The term "Hematometra" originates from the Greek words "haima" meaning blood, and "metra" meaning uterus.

Causes

Hematometra typically occurs when the outflow of blood during menstruation is obstructed. This obstruction can be due to several reasons including congenital anomalies of the genital tract, cervical stenosis, or imperforate hymen.

Symptoms

The common symptoms of Hematometra include cyclic pelvic pain, amenorrhea, and dysmenorrhea. In some cases, it may also lead to infertility.

Diagnosis

Hematometra is usually diagnosed through physical examination, ultrasound, and MRI. In some cases, a hysteroscopy may be performed to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment

The treatment for Hematometra depends on the underlying cause. It may include hormonal therapy, dilation and curettage, or surgical intervention to remove the obstruction.
