It causes small blood vessels to widen (dilate) and leak, which can cause tissue swelling. It also causes smooth muscles to contract, stomach acid to form, and heart rate to increase. Histamine is used in tests for allergies, asthma and gastric acid secretion. It's a type of neurotransmitter
