Honduras (hɒnˈdʊərəs)

Honduras (pronounced /hɒnˈdʊərəs/), officially known as the Republic of Honduras (Spanish: República de Honduras), is a country in Central America. The etymology of the name "Honduras" is derived from the Spanish words "Honduras," meaning "depths," in reference to the deep waters off the northern coast.

History

Honduras was home to several important Mesoamerican cultures, most notably the Maya, before the Spanish colonization in the sixteenth century. The Spanish introduced Roman Catholicism and the now predominant Spanish language, along with numerous customs that have blended with the indigenous culture.

Geography

Honduras is bordered to the west by Guatemala, to the southwest by El Salvador, to the southeast by Nicaragua, to the south by the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Fonseca, and to the north by the Gulf of Honduras, a large inlet of the Caribbean Sea.

Health Care

Health care in Honduras is a major concern due to the country's high poverty rate. The country has a public health care system, but it is under-resourced and under-staffed. The World Health Organization has been working with the Honduran government to improve health care infrastructure and access to medical services.
