Iberogast

Iberogast (pronounced: eye-be-ro-gast), also known as STW 5, is a liquid formulation of nine herbs. A product of Germany, it's widely used in Europe for the treatment of various gastrointestinal disorders.

Etymology

The name "Iberogast" is derived from its main component, Iberis amara, and the German word for stomach, "Gast".

Ingredients

Iberogast is a combination of extracts from nine medicinal herbs:

  • Iberis amara: The whole plant is used. It has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antispasmodic, and calming properties.
  • Angelica: Roots are used. It has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antispasmodic properties.
  • Caraway: Fruits are used. It has antispasmodic properties and is also a carminative.
  • Chamomile: Flowers are used. It has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antispasmodic, and calming properties.
  • St. Mary's Thistle: Fruits are used. It has hepatoprotective properties.
  • Lemon balm: Leaves are used. It has antispasmodic and calming properties.
  • Peppermint: Leaves are used. It has antispasmodic properties.
  • Greater celandine: Above ground parts are used. It has antispasmodic properties.
  • Licorice: Roots are used. It has anti-inflammatory and calming properties.

Uses

Iberogast is used for managing symptoms of functional gastrointestinal disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and functional dyspepsia. It works by improving the tone of the muscles in the gastrointestinal tract, reducing inflammation, and promoting healthy digestion.

Side Effects

While generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience side effects such as allergic reactions, stomach cramps, and nausea. It is advised to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new medication or supplement.
