Short definitionimmune thrombocytopenic purpura (ih-MYOON THROM-boh-sy-toh-PEE-nik PUR-pyoo-ruh) A condition in which platelets (blood cells that cause blood clots to form) from immune system are destroyed. The low platelet count causes easy bruising and bleeding, which is visible as purple areas on the skin, mucous membranes, and the outer linings of the organs.
