Impacted

Impacted (/ɪmˈpaktɪd/), from the Latin impactus, meaning "pressed closely together" or "condensed", is a medical term used to describe a condition where a structure is caught or wedged within another structure. This term is often used in dentistry, orthopedics, and gastroenterology.

Dentistry

In dentistry, an impacted tooth is one that has not fully erupted into its expected position and is instead trapped against another tooth, bone, or soft tissue. This often occurs with wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, but can happen with any tooth.

Orthopedics

In orthopedics, impaction refers to a type of fracture where one fragment of bone is driven into another. This is commonly seen in fractures of the proximal humerus and distal radius.

Gastroenterology

In gastroenterology, fecal impaction is a condition where stool becomes hard and lodged in the rectum, making it difficult or impossible to pass. This can lead to serious complications if not treated promptly.
