Impulsive (/ɪmˈpʌlsɪv/), derived from the Latin word "impulsivus", refers to a tendency to act on a whim, displaying behavior characterized by little or no forethought, reflection, or consideration of the consequences.

Definition

Impulsive behavior can be defined as a sudden, unplanned action that is not mediated by conscious thought. It is often associated with a lack of self-control and a disregard for the potential negative outcomes of one's actions.

  • Compulsive: A related term, referring to behavior that is driven by an irresistible urge, despite potential negative consequences.
  • Inhibition: The ability to suppress impulsive behavior, which is often impaired in individuals with high levels of impulsivity.
  • Self-control: The ability to control one's emotions, behavior, and desires in order to achieve long-term goals, which is often lacking in impulsive individuals.

Clinical Significance

Impulsivity is a core feature of various psychiatric disorders such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). It is also associated with substance use disorders and can be a significant factor in risk-taking behavior.

Assessment

Impulsivity can be assessed using various psychological tests, such as the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS) and the Conners' Continuous Performance Test (CPT).

Treatment

Treatment for impulsivity often involves cognitive-behavioral therapy, which aims to help individuals develop better impulse control. Medications, such as stimulants and mood stabilizers, may also be used in some cases.
