Joint replacement surgery (pronunciation: /ˈdʒɔɪnt rɪˈpleɪsmənt ˈsɜːrdʒəri/), also known as arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure in which the damaged parts of a joint are replaced with artificial components.

Etymology

The term "joint replacement surgery" is derived from the English words "joint" (from Old English geōtan, meaning 'to pour'), "replacement" (from Old French replacer, meaning 'to place back'), and "surgery" (from Old French surgerye, meaning 'work done by hand').

Procedure

Joint replacement surgery involves removing the damaged joint and replacing it with a prosthetic joint. The most commonly replaced joints are the hip and knee, but joints in the shoulder, ankle, elbow, and wrist can also be replaced. The artificial joint, called a prosthesis, is made of metal, plastic, or ceramic materials.

Indications

Joint replacement surgery is typically recommended for patients with severe joint pain or dysfunction that is not alleviated by non-surgical treatments such as physical therapy, medication, or arthroscopy. The most common conditions leading to joint replacement surgery are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and post-traumatic arthritis.

Risks and Complications

As with any surgery, joint replacement surgery carries risks, including infection, blood clots, nerve injury, and complications from anesthesia. Additionally, the artificial joint may wear out over time or become loose, requiring revision surgery.

Recovery

Recovery from joint replacement surgery involves physical therapy to restore strength and mobility to the joint. The length of recovery varies depending on the specific joint replaced and the patient's overall health.
