Kidney Transplantation

Kidney transplantation or renal transplantation is the organ transplant of a kidney into a patient with end-stage renal disease. Kidney transplantation is typically classified as deceased-donor (formerly known as cadaveric) or living-donor transplantation depending on the source of the donor organ.

Pronunciation

Kidney Transplantation: /ˈkidni trænsˌplɑːnˈteɪʃən/

Etymology

The term "Kidney" comes from the Old English word 'cwiðe', which means 'womb'. The term "Transplantation" comes from the Latin word 'transplantare' which means 'to move and plant in another place'.

Procedure

Kidney transplantation involves the surgical attachment of a healthy kidney, obtained from either a deceased or living donor, into the body of a patient suffering from severe kidney disease or kidney failure. The new kidney takes over the function of filtering blood, a task the patient's own kidneys are no longer capable of performing effectively.
