Short definitionLangerhans cell histiocytosis (LANG-er-hanz sel HIS-tee-oh-sy-TOH-sis) A group of rare disorders in which too many Langerhans cells (a type of white blood cells) grow in and damage certain tissues and organs, including bones, skin and lungs. Langerhans cell histiocytosis can also affect the pituitary gland (which produces hormones that control other glands and many bodily functions, especially growth).
