Lasker Award

The Lasker Award (pronounced: lass-ker award) is one of the most prestigious awards in the field of medicine and biomedical research. It is often referred to as the "American Nobel" due to its reputation for recognizing groundbreaking achievements in medical science.

Etymology

The Lasker Award is named after Albert Lasker and his wife Mary Lasker, who were prominent figures in the field of medical research and public health advocacy in the United States during the 20th century.

Overview

The Lasker Awards have been awarded annually since 1945 by the Lasker Foundation. They are given in three categories: the Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award, the Lasker-Basic Medical Research Award, and the Lasker-Koshland Special Achievement Award in Medical Science. The awards are intended to recognize the contributions of scientists, physicians, and public servants who have made major advances in the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, cure, or prevention of human disease.
