Levothyroxine

Levothyroxine (pronounced: lee-voh-thigh-ROX-een) is a synthetic form of thyroxine (T4), a hormone that is naturally produced by the thyroid gland. It is used to treat thyroid disorders, such as hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones.

Etymology

The term "levothyroxine" is derived from the Latin "levo-", meaning "left", and the Greek "thyroxine", which is the name of the hormone it replaces. The "levo-" prefix refers to the fact that the molecule is a left-handed isomer of thyroxine.

Usage

Levothyroxine is used to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). It replaces or provides more thyroid hormone, which is normally produced by the thyroid gland. Low thyroid hormone levels can occur naturally or when the thyroid gland is injured by radiation/medications or removed by surgery.

Side Effects

Common side effects of levothyroxine include irregular heartbeat, mood changes, tiredness, hair loss, and weight changes. If these effects persist or worsen, patients are advised to inform their doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Precautions

Before taking levothyroxine, patients should inform their doctor or pharmacist if they are allergic to it; or if they have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.
