Lisinopril/hydrochlorothiazide
Lisinopril/hydrochlorothiazide
Lisinopril/hydrochlorothiazide (pronunciation: li-SIN-o-pril/hye-droe-klor-oh-THYE-a-zide) is a combination medication used primarily in the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure).
Etymology
The name Lisinopril is derived from its chemical structure, which is a lysine-analog of enalaprilat, the active metabolite of enalapril. Hydrochlorothiazide, on the other hand, is named for its chemical composition, which includes a hydrochloride group and a thiazide group.
Usage
Lisinopril/hydrochlorothiazide is used to treat high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. This product contains two medications: lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide. Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor and works by relaxing blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily. Hydrochlorothiazide is a "water pill" (diuretic) that causes you to make more urine, which helps your body get rid of extra salt and water.
