A medical symptom is a departure from normal function or feeling which is noticed by a patient, indicating the presence of disease or abnormality. A symptom is subjective, observed by the patient, and cannot be measured directly.

Etymology

The term "symptom" comes from the Greek word "symptoma," meaning "an accident, misfortune, that which befalls," and "medical" is derived from the Latin "medicus," meaning "physician."

List of Common Medical Symptoms

  • Abdominal pain: Pain that occurs between the chest and pelvic regions.
  • Chest pain: Pain that may be caused by heart, lung, or stomach problems.
  • Fatigue: A feeling of tiredness or exhaustion or a need to rest because of lack of energy or strength.
  • Fever: A temporary increase in body temperature, often due to an illness.

  • Shortness of breath: Difficulty breathing or feeling like you can't get enough air.
