Local Government

Local government (pronunciation: /ˈloʊkəl ˈɡʌvərnˌmɛnt/) is a form of public administration which, in a majority of contexts, exists as the lowest tier of administration within a given state. The term is used to contrast with offices at national or subnational level, which are often referred to as 'central government', 'national government', or 'federal government' and also to supranational government which deals with governing institutions between states.

Etymology

The term "local government" was first used in the 19th century and was used to refer to the governing bodies that were responsible for the administration of specific localities. The term "local" is derived from the Latin word "localis", which means pertaining to a place. The term "government" is derived from the Old French word "governer", which means to govern or rule.
