Lung transplantation

Lung transplantation (pronunciation: lʌŋ ˌtrænsplɑːnˈteɪʃən) is a surgical procedure in which a patient's diseased lungs are partially or completely replaced by lungs which come from a donor.

Etymology

The term "transplantation" comes from the Latin trans- (across) and plantare (to plant). The term "lung" comes from the Old English lungen, which means "the light organ."

Procedure

A lung transplant is typically reserved for people who have tried other medications or treatments, but their conditions haven't sufficiently improved. The procedure involves removing the patient's lung and replacing it with the donor's lung. Depending on the patient's health condition, a single lung or both lungs may be transplanted.

Types of Lung Transplantation

There are three types of lung transplants: Single-lung transplantation, Double-lung transplantation, and Heart-lung transplantation.

  • Single-lung transplantation is a procedure where only one lung is replaced. This is often used for treating diseases such as pulmonary fibrosis or emphysema.
  • Double-lung transplantation involves replacing both lungs. This is often used for conditions such as cystic fibrosis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • Heart-lung transplantation is a procedure where both the heart and lungs are replaced by organs from a deceased donor. This is used for conditions where both the heart and lungs are severely affected.

Related Terms

  • Donor: A person who provides a body part, such as a lung, for transplantation.
  • Recipient: A person who receives a body part, such as a lung, from a donor.
  • Transplant rejection: A complication that occurs when the recipient's immune system attacks the transplanted organ.
  • Immunosuppressant drugs: Medications that lower the body's immune response and reduce the chance of transplant rejection.
