Magic Mushroom

Magic Mushroom (/ˈmædʒɪk ˈmʌʃruːm/), also known as Psilocybin Mushroom or Psychedelic Mushroom, is a type of fungus that contains the naturally occurring psychedelic compounds psilocybin and psilocin. The term "magic mushroom" is derived from their hallucinogenic effect when ingested.

Etymology

The term "magic mushroom" is believed to have been coined in the 1970s. The word "magic" refers to the hallucinogenic effects of the mushrooms, while "mushroom" is a reference to the fungal nature of the substance. The scientific name, Psilocybe, comes from the Greek words psilos (ψιλος) meaning "bare" and kube (κυβη) meaning "head", referring to the mushroom's cap.

Usage

Magic mushrooms have been used for thousands of years for both spiritual and medicinal purposes among various cultures. Today, they are used recreationally for their psychedelic effects, which include changes in perception, mood, thought, and a sense of unity with the universe.

Effects

The effects of magic mushrooms come from the psychedelic compounds psilocybin and psilocin. When ingested, these compounds are converted in the body to psilocin, which is responsible for the psychedelic effects. These effects can include visual and auditory hallucinations, changes in perception, euphoria, and spiritual experiences.
