Mandibular Fossa

The Mandibular Fossa (/mænˈdɪbjʊlər ˈfɒsə/; from Latin mandibula meaning "jawbone" and fossa meaning "ditch or trench") is a part of the temporal bone in the human skull. It is a concave depression located on the internal surface of the temporal bone and is involved in the formation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

Anatomy

The Mandibular Fossa is located on the inferior surface of the zygomatic process of the temporal bone. It is bounded anteriorly by the articular tubercle and posteriorly by the tympanic part of the temporal bone. The fossa is divided into two parts: the anterior part, which is smooth and concave, and the posterior part, which is rough and convex. The anterior part is involved in the formation of the temporomandibular joint, while the posterior part is not involved in joint formation.

Function

The primary function of the Mandibular Fossa is to form the upper part of the temporomandibular joint, which allows for movement of the mandible (lower jaw). This joint is one of the most complex in the body, allowing for a wide range of movements including opening and closing the mouth, chewing, and speaking.
