They work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, and private practices, and may specialize in a particular area of medicine such as pediatrics, surgery, or psychiatry.

Education

Becoming a medical doctor requires a significant amount of education and training. Residency programs can last from three to seven years, depending on the specialty chosen. During this time, medical doctors-in-training work under the supervision of experienced physicians and are responsible for diagnosing and treating patients.

Fellowship

After completing residency, some medical doctors choose to specialize in an area of their interest by doing fellowships to become specialists.

Licensing

Upon completion of their residency, medical doctors must pass a licensing exam in order to practice medicine in their state.
