Medullary Breast Carcinoma

Medullary Breast Carcinoma (pronunciation: meh-duh-luh-ree brest kar-si-noh-muh) is a rare subtype of Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, accounting for less than 5% of all Breast Cancer cases.

Etymology

The term "Medullary" is derived from the Latin word "medulla," which means "marrow." It is so named because of the soft, fleshy nature of the tumor that resembles the medulla (inner part) of an organ, in this case, the breast.

Definition

Medullary Breast Carcinoma is characterized by its distinct histological features. It is typically well-circumscribed and composed of high-grade cells that form syncytial growth patterns. The tumor is often associated with a heavy lymphocytic infiltrate.

Symptoms

The symptoms of Medullary Breast Carcinoma are similar to those of other types of breast cancer. They may include a lump in the breast, changes in breast shape or size, skin changes on the breast, and nipple discharge.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of Medullary Breast Carcinoma is typically made through a combination of Mammography, Ultrasound, and Biopsy. The definitive diagnosis is made by histological examination of the biopsy specimen.

Treatment

Treatment options for Medullary Breast Carcinoma include Surgery, Radiation Therapy, Chemotherapy, and Hormone Therapy. The choice of treatment depends on the stage of the disease, the patient's overall health, and personal preferences.

Prognosis

Despite its high-grade histological features, Medullary Breast Carcinoma has a relatively good prognosis compared to other types of breast cancer. This is largely due to its tendency to be diagnosed at an earlier stage and its responsiveness to treatment.
