Mesomark Assay

The Mesomark Assay (pronounced: me-so-mark as-say) is a blood test used primarily in the diagnosis and monitoring of malignant pleural mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that affects the thin layer of tissue that covers the majority of your internal organs (mesothelium).

Etymology

The term "Mesomark Assay" is derived from the words "meso", short for mesothelioma, and "mark", referring to the biomarker it detects. "Assay" is a term used in pathology to describe the testing of a substance.

Procedure

The Mesomark Assay measures the levels of Soluble Mesothelin-Related Peptides (SMRPs) in the blood. SMRPs are released into the bloodstream by mesothelioma cells. An elevated level of SMRPs can indicate the presence of mesothelioma, but it is not definitive proof. The test is often used in conjunction with other diagnostic methods such as imaging tests and biopsies.
