Methylene

Methylene (/mɛˈθaɪliːn/), also known as dihydridocarbon or CH2, is a hydrocarbon radical that consists of a carbon atom bonded to two hydrogen atoms. It is a highly reactive and unstable compound that is not usually encountered in pure form, but is a key component in many important chemical reactions and compounds.

Etymology

The term "methylene" comes from the Greek words "methy" meaning wine, and "hylene" meaning wood. It was first used in the 19th century to refer to a substance obtained by the destructive distillation of wood. The modern chemical meaning was established in the late 19th century, when it was applied to the CH2 radical.
