Midwives

Midwives (pronunciation: /ˈmɪdˌwaɪvz/) are healthcare professionals specializing in pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, women's sexual and reproductive health, and newborn care. They have a critical role in the care and wellbeing of mothers and babies.

Etymology

The term "midwife" comes from the Old English "mid wif" or "with woman", indicating the person who is with the woman (mother) during childbirth.

Role and Responsibilities

Midwives provide care and support to women during pregnancy, labour, and the postpartum period. They also provide care for the newborn and assist the mother with breastfeeding. Midwives work in various settings including hospitals, birthing centres, and providing home birth services. They are trained to recognize and deal with complications in mother and child, and refer women to medical professionals if necessary.

Education and Training

Becoming a midwife requires specific education and training. In many countries, midwives must complete a university degree program in midwifery and are regulated by a licensing body. They may also be required to maintain their skills through continuing education and professional development activities.
