Mozambique

Mozambique (pronunciation: /ˌmoʊzæmˈbiːk, -ˈbɪk/), officially known as the Republic of Mozambique, is a country located in Southeast Africa bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east, Tanzania to the north, Malawi and Zambia to the northwest, Zimbabwe to the west, and Eswatini (Swaziland) and South Africa to the southwest.

Etymology

The etymology of the name "Mozambique" is thought to come from the Swahili Musengezi, which was the name of an old sultanate located in the northern part of the country. The Portuguese, who colonized the area, adapted the name to Moçambique.
