Myocardial Disarray

Myocardial disarray (pronunciation: my-o-car-dial dis-ar-ray) is a pathological condition characterized by the abnormal arrangement of cardiomyocytes, the muscle cells in the heart. This condition is often associated with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and sudden cardiac death.

Etymology

The term "myocardial disarray" is derived from the Greek words "myo" meaning muscle, "kardia" meaning heart, and the English word "disarray" which refers to a state of disorganization or untidiness.

Definition

Myocardial disarray is a histopathological feature characterized by the haphazard arrangement of cardiomyocytes, which are normally aligned in parallel arrays. This disorganization can disrupt the normal electrical conduction of the heart, leading to potentially fatal arrhythmias.

Causes

Myocardial disarray is most commonly associated with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a genetic disorder characterized by the thickening of the heart muscle. It can also occur in other conditions such as dilated cardiomyopathy, arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, and myocarditis.

Symptoms

Symptoms of myocardial disarray can vary greatly depending on the underlying cause. They may include chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, and syncope. In severe cases, myocardial disarray can lead to sudden cardiac death.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of myocardial disarray is typically made through a combination of echocardiography, cardiac MRI, and endomyocardial biopsy. Genetic testing may also be performed to identify any underlying genetic disorders.

Treatment

Treatment for myocardial disarray is primarily focused on managing the symptoms and preventing complications. This may include medications to control heart rate and rhythm, surgical procedures to remove excess heart muscle, and in severe cases, heart transplantation.
