Nocturnal clitoral tumescence (pronunciation: nok-TUR-nul kli-TOR-ul too-MES-ens) is a physiological phenomenon where the clitoris becomes engorged with blood and erect during REM sleep, similar to the nocturnal penile tumescence in males.

Etymology

The term "Nocturnal clitoral tumescence" is derived from Latin nocturnus ("of the night"), clitoridis ("of the clitoris"), and tumescere ("to swell").

Physiology

During the sleep cycle, particularly during REM sleep, the body undergoes various physiological changes. One of these changes is increased blood flow to the genital area, resulting in an erection of the clitoris. This is thought to be related to the erotic dreams often associated with REM sleep, but the exact mechanism is not fully understood.

Related Terms

  • Clitoral erection: The process by which the clitoris becomes engorged with blood and erect.
  • Nocturnal penile tumescence: The phenomenon of penile erections during sleep, commonly associated with REM sleep.
  • REM sleep: A stage of sleep characterized by rapid eye movements, dreaming, and increased physiological activity.
