Noise (/nɔɪz/) is an unwanted or disturbing sound that can have significant impacts on human health and environmental quality. Noise pollution is often neglected, yet it is one of the most prevalent forms of pollution in modern society.

The word "noise" comes from the Latin word "nausea," meaning seasickness.

Definition

Noise is defined as unwanted or disturbing sound. Sound becomes unwanted when it either interferes with normal activities such as sleeping, conversation, or disrupts or diminishes one's quality of life.

Effects of Noise

Noise can have several effects on humans, including Hearing loss, Stress, Sleep disturbances, and Cardiovascular diseases. It can also have negative impacts on wildlife, particularly bird species that rely on sound for communication.

Noise control or noise mitigation is a set of strategies to reduce noise pollution by using Noise barriers, Sound baffles, or other methods.
