Oman (oh-mahn)

Oman (pronounced /oʊˈmɑːn/), officially known as the Sultanate of Oman, is an Arab country located in the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula.

Etymology

The origin of the name "Oman" is uncertain. It seems to be related to Pliny the Elder's "Omana" and Ptolemy's "Omanon", both probably the ancient Sohar. The city or region is typically etymologized in Arabic from aamen or amoun, meaning "settled", and hence "civilized".

Geography

Oman is bordered by the United Arab Emirates to the northwest, Saudi Arabia to the west, and Yemen to the southwest. The coast is formed by the Arabian Sea on the southeast and the Gulf of Oman on the northeast. The Madha and Mussandam exclaves are surrounded by the UAE on their land borders, with the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman forming Mussandam's coastal boundaries.
