Parapsoriasis

Parapsoriasis (/ˌpærəpsɔːˈraɪsɪs/) is a group of rare skin disorders that are characterized by scaly patches or slightly elevated plaques and papules that are similar to psoriasis. The term 'parapsoriasis' was first used in 1902 and is derived from the Greek words 'para' meaning 'beside' and 'psoriasis', one of the conditions it closely resembles.

Types

There are two main types of parapsoriasis: Pityriasis lichenoides and Large plaque parapsoriasis.

Pityriasis lichenoides

This is a rare type of parapsoriasis that often affects children and young adults. It is characterized by the sudden onset of small, scaling papules that may evolve into larger patches.

Large plaque parapsoriasis

This is a rare type of parapsoriasis that is characterized by large, scaling plaques. It is often seen in middle-aged or elderly men and can progress to cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.

Symptoms

The symptoms of parapsoriasis can vary depending on the type, but they often include:

  • Red, scaly patches or plaques on the skin
  • Itching
  • Skin lesions that may be raised or flat

Causes

The exact cause of parapsoriasis is unknown. However, it is thought to be related to an abnormal immune response. Other factors such as genetics, environmental factors, and certain infections may also play a role.

Treatment

Treatment for parapsoriasis may include:

  • Topical corticosteroids
  • Light therapy (Phototherapy)
  • Systemic medications

Prognosis

The prognosis for parapsoriasis is generally good, but it can be a chronic condition that requires ongoing treatment. In some cases, large plaque parapsoriasis can progress to cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.
