Patrick's Test

Patrick's Test (pronounced: PAH-trick's test), also known as the FABER test (pronounced: FAY-ber test), is a medical examination procedure used to evaluate hip joint pathology. The name "Patrick's Test" is derived from the name of the physician who first described it, Dr. Hugh Talbot Patrick. The term "FABER" is an acronym for Flexion, ABduction, and External Rotation, which are the movements involved in the test.

Procedure

The patient lies flat on their back on an examination table. The physician or physical therapist flexes, abducts, and externally rotates the patient's hip by placing the foot of the tested leg onto the knee of the opposite leg, forming a figure-four shape. The examiner then applies downward pressure to the tested knee. Pain or discomfort during this procedure may indicate a hip joint pathology such as sacroiliac joint dysfunction or hip impingement.

Interpretation

A positive Patrick's Test is indicated by pain or discomfort in the hip or sacroiliac joint on the tested side. This may suggest conditions such as osteoarthritis, hip impingement, hip labral tear, or sacroiliitis. However, further diagnostic tests are usually required to confirm the diagnosis.
