Perioperative Mortality

Perioperative mortality (pronunciation: per-ee-op-er-a-tive mor-tal-ity) is a term used in the field of medicine to refer to the death of patients in the period surrounding their surgical procedure. This period typically includes the time during the surgery, as well as the immediate preoperative and postoperative periods.

Etymology

The term "perioperative" is derived from the Greek words "peri" (around) and "operative" (pertaining to surgery). "Mortality" comes from the Latin "mortalitas", meaning "death". Thus, "perioperative mortality" refers to deaths that occur around the time of a surgical operation.

Definition

Perioperative mortality is defined as any death, regardless of cause, that occurs within 30 days of a surgical procedure, in or out of the hospital. In some cases, the period may be extended to 90 days.
