Basal-cell carcinoma

Basal-cell carcinoma (pronunciation: /ˈbeɪsəl sɛl kɑːrˈsɪnoʊmə/) is a type of skin cancer that originates from the basal cells of the skin. It is the most common type of skin cancer and is often caused by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Etymology

The term "basal-cell carcinoma" is derived from the type of cell where the cancer originates - the basal cells. These cells are found at the bottom of the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin. "Carcinoma" is a term used to describe a cancer that begins in the skin or in tissues that line or cover internal organs.

Symptoms

Basal-cell carcinoma often appears as a small, shiny bump or nodule on the skin. This is especially common on sun-exposed areas such as the face, ears, and neck. Other symptoms may include a skin growth that bleeds easily, a sore that does not heal, or a change in the size or color of a mole or other skin growth.

Related Terms

  • Dermatology: The branch of medicine dealing with the skin and its diseases.
  • Melanoma: A more dangerous type of skin cancer that originates in the pigment-producing melanocytes in the basal layer of the skin.
  • Squamous cell carcinoma: Another type of skin cancer that originates in the squamous cells of the skin.
  • Mohs surgery: A precise surgical technique used to treat skin cancer, including basal-cell carcinoma.

Treatment

Treatment for basal-cell carcinoma often involves surgical removal of the cancerous growth. This can be done through excision, Mohs surgery, or curettage and electrodessication. Other treatments may include radiation therapy, cryotherapy, photodynamic therapy, or the use of topical medications.
