Polypropylene (pronunciation: /ˌpɒliˈprɒpɪliːn/), often abbreviated to PP, is a type of thermoplastic polymer resin used in a variety of applications. It is produced via chain-growth polymerization from the monomer propylene.

Etymology

The term "polypropylene" is derived from the Greek words 'poly' meaning 'many' and 'propolis' meaning 'city'. This is a reference to the many propylene units that make up the polymer.

Properties

Polypropylene is known for its high melting point, excellent chemical resistance, and high tensile strength. It is often used in packaging, labeling, textiles, and reusable containers of various types.

Production

The production of polypropylene involves the polymerization of propylene monomers using a catalyst. The most common method is the Ziegler-Natta catalyst process.
