Privacy (pry-vuh-see)

Privacy (pronounced as /ˈprɪvəsi/ in American English and /ˈpraɪvəsi/ in British English) is a fundamental human right recognized in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and in many other international and regional treaties.

Etymology

The term "privacy" comes from the Latin word privatus meaning "separated from the rest, deprived of something, esp. office, participation, etc." and from privo meaning "to deprive". It is first recorded in English in the late 15th century.

Definition

Privacy can be defined as the ability of an individual or group to seclude themselves or information about themselves, and thereby express themselves selectively. The boundaries and content of what is considered private differ among cultures and individuals, but share common themes.
