Professional ethics (pronunciation: pro-fesh-uh-nl eth-iks) refers to the personal and corporate standards of behavior expected by professionals. The term is applicable to any profession, but most commonly used in the context of medicine, law, and business.

Etymology

The term "professional ethics" is derived from the Latin word "professio", meaning "public declaration", and the Greek word "ethikos", meaning "moral philosophy". It is a combination of the standards or rules set by the profession and the personal moral values of the professional.

Definition

Professional ethics encompass the personal, organizational, and corporate standards of behavior expected of a professional. A professional is expected to maintain a high level of professionalism, integrity, and ethical conduct. This includes, but is not limited to, dealing honestly and fairly with clients, maintaining confidentiality, avoiding conflicts of interest, and upholding the reputation and values of the profession.
