Pronunciation
- /ˈpjuːbɪk hɛər/
Etymology
The term "pubic hair" is derived from the Latin pubes, meaning "of adulthood" and capillus, meaning "hair".
Definition
Pubic hair is the secondary sexual characteristic that appears during puberty as a sign of sexual maturity. It is found in the pubic region around the genitals and sometimes at the top of the inside of the thighs. In the majority of individuals, it is darker, coarser, and curlier than the hair on the rest of the body.
Function
The exact function of pubic hair is still a subject of debate among scientists. However, it is believed to play a role in sexual attraction, protection against bacteria and other pathogens, and providing a cushion against friction that can cause skin abrasion.
