Pulmonary Agenesis

Pulmonary agenesis (pronounced: puhl-MON-uh-ree ay-JEN-uh-sis) is a rare congenital condition characterized by the absence of one or both lungs at birth. The term originates from the Latin words 'pulmo' meaning lung, and 'genesis' meaning origin or creation.

Definition

Pulmonary agenesis is a condition in which one or both lungs fail to develop during fetal growth. This condition can be unilateral, affecting one lung, or bilateral, affecting both lungs. Bilateral pulmonary agenesis is extremely rare and often fatal.

Symptoms

Symptoms of pulmonary agenesis can vary greatly depending on the severity of the condition. Common symptoms include difficulty breathing, rapid heart rate, and cyanosis (a bluish color of the skin due to lack of oxygen). Other symptoms may include deformities of the chest wall, heart defects, and other abnormalities.

Causes

The exact cause of pulmonary agenesis is unknown. However, it is believed to occur during the early stages of fetal development. Some researchers suggest that it may be related to genetic factors or exposure to certain environmental toxins during pregnancy.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of pulmonary agenesis is often made through prenatal ultrasound. However, in some cases, the condition may not be detected until after birth. Other diagnostic tests may include chest X-ray, CT scan, and MRI.

Treatment

Treatment for pulmonary agenesis is primarily supportive and depends on the severity of the condition. In cases of unilateral agenesis, the remaining lung may be able to provide sufficient oxygenation. In more severe cases, treatment may include respiratory support, surgery, and other interventions.
