Pyomyositis

Pyomyositis (pronunciation: pyo-my-o-si-tis) is a rare type of muscle infection that results in a pus-filled abscess. It is primarily caused by the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and is often associated with immunodeficiency conditions.

Etymology

The term "pyomyositis" is derived from the Greek words "pyon" meaning pus, "myo" meaning muscle, and "itis" meaning inflammation. Thus, it refers to the inflammation of muscle due to pus.

Symptoms

The symptoms of pyomyositis include fever, muscle pain, and swelling. In severe cases, it can lead to sepsis, a life-threatening condition.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of pyomyositis is typically made through a combination of medical history, physical examination, and imaging studies such as MRI or ultrasound. In some cases, a biopsy may be performed to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatment for pyomyositis usually involves antibiotics to fight the bacterial infection and drainage of the abscess. In severe cases, surgery may be required.
