Refugee

Refugee (/ˌrɛfjʊˈdʒiː/; from the French réfugié, 'exiled') is a term used to describe a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster.

Etymology

The term refugee originates from the French word réfugié which means 'exiled'. It was first used in the 17th century to refer to the Huguenots who were fleeing religious persecution in France.

Definition

A refugee is defined by the United Nations as someone who is unable or unwilling to return to their country of origin owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion.
