Rhode Island (pronunciation: /ˌroʊd ˈaɪlɪnd/), officially the State of Rhode Island, is the smallest state in the United States by land area. It is located in the New England region of the country.
Etymology
The name "Rhode Island" is derived from the explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano's comparison of Block Island to the Greek Island of Rhodes. The official name of the state, "State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations", refers to the merger of four Colonial settlements, which were established by Roger Williams and his followers.
